Home of the famous Pitons, you can't miss a beautiful beach on St. Lucia - they're everywhere! Most are public so it's nice to mix with St. Lucians for relaxation.

When I visited St. Lucia in 2005, the island's tourism industry was still in its nascent stage, with only a handful of moderate to upscale accomodations from which to choose. This was a downside for my solo trip as the 'to do' options were very limited. In recent years, there has been much development so I expect there are many more mid- to upscales loding options today on the North as well as the Southern end of St. Lucia.

St. Lucia is another island marked with beautiful countryside to balance its gorgeouse beaches.  It takes about 2 hours by taxi to get from  the airport in Vieux Fort (South) to the capital area of Castries (North) so you may want to keep this in mind when planning your trip. Many of the nicer hotels are in the Vieux Fort area while Castries is busier being the cruise ship port. That said, there's a nice amount of shopping in Castries including a MUST SEE crafts market for incredible local wares, from basketware to canvas paintings.  I was able to get beautiful, handmade baskets along with gorgeous, original oils on canvas art for great prices.

Riding on long steads on St. Lucia is an adventure in and of itself. The island has breathtaking, often unexpected curves that teeter on the edges of steep cliffs and ravines. While local St. Lucians are accustomed to the roads, I would never attempt to drive there myself. I highly recommend getting a personal Taxi tour of the local villages, the Pitons and the rain forests.
